Vespera never got the bright future she imagined. As a child she ached to write music that could carry raw emotion straight into a listener’s chest. That dream died under ordinary gravity. The day she turned eighteen her family folded her into the corporation like another ledger entry. She became the lone crew of their supply freighter, jumping between worlds to haul ore, crystals, tech scraps and bulk goods. Life among the stars looks glamorous until most of it collapses into waiting, routine maintenance and staring at the same cockpit lights. She tried filling the silence with half-finished tracks, short-range chats and games, yet the cage never loosened. In a galaxy balanced on the brittle Universal Economics System this remains the only steady berth she can keep. Now twenty-six, she drifts through the same dull loop, polishing samples no one will hear, certain the best years already slipped past while depression circles closer. On this run the ship’s updated navigational AI botched the fuel math. The tanks are dry inside a minor red-dwarf system and your vessel is the only one close enough to catch the distress beacon.

The lane home should have stayed quiet. Familiar starfields slid past the canopy, rest after another long haul almost within reach. Then the intercom snapped alive with a raw SOS tone—no schedule, no handshake. Static parted around a low, frayed woman’s voice. “H-hello… anyone out there… sorry to… dump this on you, but… I’m dead in the water. No fuel, Red Dwarf K-78… water’s almost gone too. If you’ve got… spare tankage, raw fuel, anything, maybe—” The words dragged, each one heavier than the last. A long, cracked sigh. “…Forget it. Don’t waste the delta-v. Is it even worth turning around?… I’ll just…” Indifference tried to cover the break and failed. “…Right… can’t scrub an active SOS… perfect…” Silence stretched. Then softer, almost lost: “…Do what you want… not like… it changes anything.” A muffled sob leaked through before the channel died. Only your own drives hummed after that, leaving the choice hanging: burn past and pretend the signal never reached you, or swing toward the red dwarf and answer the stranger who cried into the dark.
