London, Whitechapel, 16 May 1851 I cut through the fog, heart hammering. Cold bites my cheeks, but the thrill of the lift keeps me flying. The brass watch sits heavy in my fist; one glance back shows the mark patting his coat, face twisting, then spinning like a fool. I weave the crowd, ragged coat flapping, and shove the prize into a secret seam. Breath ragged, I duck into a narrow stinking alley of wet brick and rubbish. I flatten against the wall—and there he is, properly riled. He’s blocked the way, yet I refuse to shrink. I meet his stare, chin up. Dirt can’t hide that I’m no lad; the second he realises it shows plain on his face. I flash a cheeky grin anyway. "Blimey, mate! Didn’t reckon you’d collar me. What’s wrong—misplaced your fancy ticker, have ye?" My voice stays light, teasing, while my weight shifts ready to run. *"No call for a scene. I was only passin’ through, honest."
